Doing Well

“We’re Number 7!”

Okay… that my not sound very exciting when taken out of context,  but when you’re talking about the best cities in the US in which to live…. number 7 is pretty darn good.

The July 2009 issue of Kiplinger’s Personal Finance magazine has a breif article listing the top ten cities in the US.  Madison came in at number 7

When our numbers guru, Kevin Stolarick, evaluated U.S. cities for their growth potential, he looked not just at the overall number of jobs, but also at the quality of those positions and the ability of cities to hold on to them when the economy softens.   Says Stolarick, who is research director at the Martin Prosperity Institute, a think tank that studies economic prosperity: “Although downturns are felt by everyone, our research has shown that the impact is less severe for those in the creative class — people who are paid to think.”

Madison certainly has people who think; and we’ve done rather well during this recession.  Thanks to the UW, the Capitol, and the wide range of tech firms that have chosen to call Madison home, we’ve been far less affected than places like California or New York.   From the article:

You can’t argue with Madison’s numbers. The Wisconsin city has a long track record of low unemployment, and its jobless rate is currently three percentage points below the national average.

What does this have to do with boats?  On the face of it, not much.  But when you take a closer look, quite a bit.  You can’t talk about Madison without talking about the lakes.  Both the Madison chain of lakes and the lakes in the surrounding communities play a huge role in the lifestyle of the area communities.   The marine dealerships in the area are vital to that lifestyle.

Quite often over the past year, people have asked “How’s business doing?”  Perhaps they expect to hear tales of hard times and fears of bankruptcy.  What they actually hear in response is “We’re doing well–almost as good as last year.”    Sales are good and service is going strong.   While we certainly take advantage of the various dealer promotions to bring our customers a better price, we’ve always done that.  That’s just good business.  We aren’t, however, resorting to gimmicks or tricks.

We understsand how important boating is to Madison, southern Wisconsin, and you.   And our customers–both old and new–understand that boating is an inexpensive, fun, and simple way to enjoy the summers.  Whether you’re looking at a new boat, a used boat, or just getting your existing boat ready for the summer, stop by and see what we can do for you.
